Well here we are another week into spring and there is still a little snow on the ground! We are hoping for some warm temperatures so that we can get outside and also for a fun Spring Break. Remember that there is no school on Friday April 4th. Wish a happy Spring Break to all!

Science
Monday, March 31st
Today we will be finishing up the notes from Ch. 10.1 Structure of the Atom. Students will then be working on "Structure of the Atom" worksheet.
Tuesday, April 1st
Happy April Fool's Day! We will making a concept map about atomic structure. Students will be reading through Chapter 10.2 "Smaller Particles of Matter". We will be taking a few notes about the readings.

Wednesday, April 2nd
Today we will be looking at Chapter 10.3 "Masses of Atoms ". We will be taking notes on the chapter.

Thursday, April 3rd
Students will be doing a Design Your Own Experiment Lab called "Candy Covered Isotopes". They will be making a model representing the average atomic mass calculations of isotopes.

Friday, April 4th
NO SCHOOL! Have a great Spring Break!

Ecosystems

Monday, March 31st

Students will be learning about what a habitat is, along with examples. We will be distinguishing between the living and non-living components of an ecosystem. Students will also determine which systems are human managed as well the interdependence of the organisms.

Wednesday, April 2nd

Students will be given examples of wildlife riddles from which they must determine the animal being described along with its ecosystem.

Snow, snow GO AWAY! The first full day of spring and we have a snow storm! Hopefully this is the end. Reminder: Chapter 9 Assessment is on Monday and we are weening ourselves away from using our journals on tests. Using the Journals to study should be very helpful. Also using the Jeopardy study guide on this blog and last week's blog should also be helpful.

I will be attending a conference next week, but learning is expected to continue in my absence. Mr. Musser will be the teacher and all the planning has been done to accommodate students. Please remind your child of your expectations when there is a Guest Teacher in the room. Thank you.

Science
Monday, March 24th

Chapter 9 Assessment.

Tuesday, March 25th

We will begin to work on the model of the atom. We will be reading "The Atom Family Album", drawing the faces of these family members and learning a song to go with it.

Wednesday, March 26th

Students will be learning the vocabulary for chapter 10. This is the list:
chemical symbol
nucleus
electron
proton
neutron
atomic number
electron cloud
quark
mass number
isotope
average atomic mass
periodic table
group
dot diagram
period
metal
nonmetal
metalloid

Thursday, March 27th

There will be a PowerPoint presentation on lesson 10.1. Students will take notes from the presentation. Students will be able to list the names and symbols of common elements, describe the present model of the atom, and describe how electrons are arranged in an atom.

Friday, March 28th

Students will complete the Rainbow Lab from last week due to the half day (4-7th hours).

Ecosystems

Tuesday, March 25th

Students will be looking at the multiple levels of environmental organization that exists. We will be differentiating between the living and non-living components of an ecosystem.

Thursday, March 26th

Students will be using their definitions of an ecosystem in order to distinguish whether or not an example is really an ecosystem. Students will then look at human manged ecosystems versus non- human managed ecosystems.

Here we are done with one more marking period. Conferences are next week March 19th and 20th. We are really hoping to see as many of you as possible to celebrate your child's learning, discuss their future goals and moving to high school.

We had a great Science Fair/Literacy Night on Monday Night. Lots of displays to show and activities to enjoy here at Milwood. It was a fun night.

Here we come Spring!

Science

Monday, March 17th

Today we will be finishing up lesson 9.3 with all groups. Mr. Musser and I were both gone on Thursday and so now the classes are all in different places. We hope to all be in the same spot by the end of today.

Tuesday, March 18th

We will be in the Lab working with "Is it a Substance?" Students will be mixing vinegar and baking soda and vinegar with steel wool. They will also see a demo on the weight change of a burning lighter and decomposing water.

Wednesday, March 19th

We are going to be using a Kagan Strategy (Rally Coach) to review for next week's test on lesson 9.

Thursday, March 20th

Half day. We hope to be making Rainbow Cylinders. This will focus on accurately measuring.

Ecosystems

Monday, March 17th

We will be welcoming our new class into Ecostystems. There will be a class building activity followed with a short pretest to see what students already know.

Wednesday, March 19th

We will be looking at a PowerPoint presentation about what makes Michigan such a special place to live in.

Hello to all! We are all anxious for spring to get here. Students have been working very hard on finishing up their Science Fair Projects. Students have been working during lunch hours with Mrs. Kahler and Mr. Musser as well as after school. We have some great projects under construction and all are looking forward to the Science Fair/ Literacy night on Monday, March 10th from 5:30-8:00.

Please note that conferences will be March 19th and 20th. We look forward to sitting down with you to discuss your child's progress.

Science

Monday, March 10

We will be doing Activity 9.1 "Elements, Compounds, and Mixtures". In this activity we will be looking at a number of substances in order to determine whether they are an element, compound, or mixture. We will follow up this activity with a DVD about the scientific method. Don't forget that we also have Science Fair/Literacy night from 5:30-8:00.

Tuesday, March 11

We will be working on Lesson 9.2 "The Colloid Connection". There will be a PowerPoint and some short notes. Students will learn about colloids in relation to air and water pollution.

Wednesday, March 12

Lab Day! Students will be conducting a lab called "Is it a new substance?". In this activity the students will learn to write good and accurate descriptions of four reactions and use the descriptions to find evidence for the formation of new substances.

Thursday, March 13

We will be working on Chapter 9.3 " Describing Matter". Students will be learning about physical properties, chemical properties, as well as how to distinguish between them. Students will also learn about the Law of Conservation of Mass.

Friday, March 14

Today we will be finishing up the notes from Thursday on Ch. 9.3.

Global Warming

Tuesday, March 11

Today we will be having our Global Warming Summit. At the summit we will have students present their perspectives such as auto maker, conservationists, etc. Each group will present their ideas for a solution to slow Global Warming.
