Well, this is Mr. Korchnak's last week with us. He has been so helpful to the students, families and to me. We are really going to miss him. He will be moving to NY with his wife after Christmas and substitute teaching in Albany, NY. We know that he will do well, but still wish him the best of luck.
I do apologize for anyone using my blog last week. I tried to complete my blog from home and the blog was a mess. So I made sure to also post on the board in my classroom the important dates for the next week. Students know that their science assessment is moved to this Monday instead of last week.
On Wednesday, all eighth graders at Milwood will be taking the Explore test. It is a test for students and their families to see how they are progressing. It is similar to an ACT test, but for 8th graders so they can see where they would score on the ACT. This will not affect their grade, but give them a preview of what a nationally normed test would be like.
We are still collect food for our drive. Our advisory group is running a little behind in cans so donate what you can. The top three classes will receive a pizza party. That sure would be nice.

Monday, December 10th
Students will take the unit assessment on Chapters 4, 5, and 6. Bring a book for when you finish. If your class did not get a visit from Mr. Campbell, he should be coming in to talk with you about the Explore test, Recovery, and Tardies. If this takes too much of our assessment time, you will have some time on Tuesday to finish.
Bring your science journal to help you on the assessment and turn in today to receive your grade for it.
Tuesday, December 11th
Students will create flashcards for this units' vocabulary. We are going to begin to study Waves. Here is the list of vocabulary for the unit:
wave,pitch,medium, intensity
transverse wave, loudness
crest, ultrasound technology
trough, music
wavelength, noise
amplitude, resonance
frequency, quality
compressional, wave interference
reverberation, acoustics
These flashcards will be due on Thursday, December 13th.
Wednesday, December 12th
No science class since students will be taking the Explore test.

Teacher will check your vocabulary flash cards. We will view a PowerPoint on the characteristics of waves (Physical Science ch. 18.1 page 498). Students will put the notes they take into their journal. Students will have guided practice on how to calculate the velocity of a wave and how to calculate the frequency of a wave. They will then have a worksheet to complete at home and to return tomorrow for a grade.

Collect and correct the homework from last night. Students will write and complete their own experiment concerning which wave quantities they can influence when making transverse waves in a spiral spring. They will also see what happens when this spiral spring hits an immovable barrier. Students will turn in their lab sheets at the end of the period.

Global Warming
Tuesday, December 11th
Students will get their Global Warming folders back today. They will complete a class building activity using Inside-Outside Circles. Then we will go back to our seats and watch: Biomes: The Threat of the Sea. This will help us in our research on Global Warming and the Greenhouse Effect.
Thursday, December 13th
We will sit in teams and complete a team line-up activity. Students in their teams will line up by finding where they stand relative to their teammates on some questions on the greenhouse effect and global warming. Students will then finish the rest of their video from Tuesday. Global Warming folders will be collected and graded.
